Useless Hand Syndrome (of Oppenheimer)

This is a sensory impairment where the hand is functionally impaired by sensory loss, including vibration sense, two-point discrimination, touch, and hot-cold sensation. While this is a sensory phenomena, when it occurs as a relapse presentation, steroids can be helpful in hastening return of function. With a sudden onset, ‘useless hand’ responds to steroid therapy as per exacerbation. It can often recover spontaneously, although a degree of impairment can last for months. If recovery is prolonged, occupational therapy may be helpful in accommodating activities of daily living.
